Wowsers! The Year 4 and Year 6 day trip to Zanzibar was in the words of Ms Saidy, 'Truly mwendo kasi' with lots of activities.
We set off before dawn to the Azam Ferries at the Port, taking the 7:00am boat to this wonderful island. The students were buzzing with excitement, bombarding us four teachers with their most frequent question, 'Are we there yet?'
After a quick brekkie at Forodhani Gardens, the students set off to explore a local gallery at the Old Fort where they took a painting class on creating henna-inspired artwork and Zanzibari doors. There was a buzz in the gallery as we all had a go to create beautiful pieces of art.
After this, we had a walking tour around Stone Town to learn about the history of slavery. The most devastating fact we learned and experienced was the underground holding chambers for slaves. Our students were terribly sad to learn of the harsh conditions slaves had to endure and they were glad to learn that through the work of several abolitionists including David Livingstone, slavery is abolished.
We then headed to a scrumptious lunch and soft drinks in the very busy Lukmaan restaurant. Thereafter, we visited a local mosque where we learned about some religious Islamic artefacts as well as the structure and design of mosques.
Finally, our students enjoyed a splish and a splash at the pool in the Golden Boutique Hotel, a highlight of the whole group. Our return to Dar was smooth and our students enjoyed conversation and games on the Ferry back. We made many memories so be sure to ask your child what their favourite part of the trip was.
