YEAR 8 ART TRIP

The ceramics workshop at Mzinga Creek Pottery & Ceramics Shop enabled students to gain ceramic skills from a local professional ceramicist, Mary Siwingwa. Students also visited the art gallery and exhibitions at The National Museum of Tanzania to appreciate local art, artists, their styles, techniques, processes, and the materials they use when creating their artworks.

You will probably want to buy everything once you set your eyes on the beautiful items at Mzinga Creek Pottery & Ceramics Shop. Each piece is a testament to the effort and passion invested in crafting exquisite homeware. Mary Siwingwa, fondly known as Mama Mzinga, is both an artist and a teacher who is passionate about her craft and loves sharing her artistic skills with others through teaching. Although Mama Mzinga has created many beautiful paintings, her current and primary focus is on pottery and ceramics. Mzinga Creek Pottery was established in 2004 and has been in business ever since. The name derives from its location in the Mzinga area, on a creek overlooking the Mzinga River and its surrounding mangrove trees.

As a woman who took the initiative to establish a pottery studio, providing training and creating opportunities for youth, Mama Mzinga has faced numerous challenges over the years but has managed to keep the studio thriving. She takes great joy in teaching others to create stunning ceramic and pottery pieces, as it allows her to share her skills with others. When asked about her proficiency in pottery and ceramics, she revealed that she learned most of her skills in Tanzania, although she has attended classes and art sessions in various countries to further develop her expertise.

Mama Mzinga offers pottery and ceramics classes every Saturday, where for a fee, participants can learn and enjoy making beautiful items under her guidance. Students leave with their creations at the end of the class. She encourages more Tanzanians to engage in art, as many of her supporters are non-Tanzanians. At Kiafrika, we love Mama Mzinga and her products, and we encourage everyone to support her.
