Our Year 6 students took an interesting trip to the Dar es Salaam Port in Kurasini District two weeks ago to understand the workings of the port and its role in trade. This trip linked to their learning in Geography and their knowledge of the role of water bodies in trade. The students were greeted by Ms Levina Msia, the chief Public Relations officer for Tanzania Port Authorities (TPA). Some of the highlights of our trip was getting to meet the Port Director himself, Mr S. Mrisho, and learning some valuable nuggets from him. Did you know that TPA generates 40% of the country’s revenue each year? Our students were eager to learn about the number of jobs that are needed by TPA including but not limited to environmentalists, lawyers, communications officers, navigational staff, engineers, culinary personnel, scientists, accountants and so on and so forth. Additionally, the students were very excited to see the offloading of shipping containers from a very large vessel to the loading bay and they even got to see massive industrial plant vehicles that are twice the height of our students. Wowsers! We ended our trip with a yummy meal at KFC and a fabulous impromptu dance party. What fun! Year 6 have also been learning about the visible spectrum in Science and were excited to see how the colours of the rainbow are actually present in light when they made colour wheels in class. Why not ask the children about what they learned? We are grateful that we have eyes to see the amazing world around us.
