Year 6: Heart Dissections and Experiments in the Circulatory System

12th October 2024

HANDS ON LEARNING

This half term, we have been learning all about the Circulatory System. Our learning recently has focused on Science experiments and dissections! With the help of Miss Sheilla and our teachers, we bravely dissected a cow's heart in the laboratory. It was interesting to note the main blood vessels, the chambers of the heart and although a little tricky, to recognise the correct orientation of the heart by noting the musculature of this organ. Did you know that the human heart beats around 100,000 each day? We were especially fascinated about the heart's valves that prevent backflow of blood. Did you know that a valve is just a flap of tissue which has such a specific and complex role in the heart? We have also been learning about the Scientific Method and thoroughly enjoyed using an oximeter to determine how our heart rate changes depending on what physical activity such as jogging or jumping jacks we are doing.
