Year 6 Bagamoyo Trip

20th April 2024

Our trip to Bagamoyo at the end of last term was a memorable and vital learning experience for our Year 6 students as they concluded their study of the transatlantic slave trade. We visited the Old Fort, the German Boma, the German cemetery, the beach, Caravan Serai, and finally, the David Livingstone Museum. In studying the artefacts there, including the slave chains and manacles, as well as learning from our amazing guide, Mr Praygod, the students gained a better understanding of the cruelties of slavery and the impact it had on the Coast and its people. They also learned about the meaning of Bagamoyo (Bwaga-moyo) which means ‘to lay down your heart’ and understood the hopelessness that slavery instilled on anyone it inflicted. As global citizens, we have every confidence that our students will learn to fight for the freedoms of those who are oppressed. “May we think of freedom, not as the right to do as we please, but as an opportunity to do what is right.” Peter Marshall
