STEM

5th October 2024

At Braeburn Dar es Salaam International School, we are excited to share the latest STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities that our students have been actively involved in. Our goal is to make these subjects not only educational but also fun and engaging, inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators.

One of the most exciting projects involved the making of a toilet bomb, a fascinating exercise that brought chemistry to life. Using a combination of household ingredients such as bicarbonate of soda, citric acid, and essential oils, students created a fizzing, eco-friendly cleaning solution. The project not only helped them understand chemical reactions but also highlighted the importance of correct measurements and proportions in chemistry. By observing the fizzing and cleaning action of the toilet bombs, students saw firsthand how chemistry can be applied in everyday life. This activity also promoted environmental awareness by encouraging the use of natural, non-toxic cleaning products. It was a thrilling way to dive into the world of chemistry, and the students were proud of the results.

In another exciting project, students demonstrated their engineering and physics skills by building a simple motor. With only a few materials—a magnet, copper wire, and a battery—they were able to create working motors. This activity introduced them to the fundamentals of electromagnetism and electrical circuits. As they assembled their motors and watched them spin into action, students gained a deeper understanding of how electrical energy can be transformed into mechanical energy. It was a rewarding experience that sparked curiosity about how many everyday items work, from fans to electric cars.

Both activities were part of our broader effort to make STEM subjects more engaging for students at Braeburn Dar es Salaam International School. We firmly believe that when students can apply theoretical knowledge through hands-on experiences, they develop a deeper and more lasting understanding of the subjects. These projects gave them the opportunity to explore the practical side of Chemistry and Physics while fostering creativity and problem-solving skills.

At Braeburn, we are committed to fostering a passion for STEM subjects, including Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Computer Science, and Mathematics. We aim to create a learning environment where students can experiment, innovate, and enjoy the process of discovery.

We look forward to seeing what exciting projects our students will tackle next! Stay tuned for more updates on their STEM adventures.
