At Braeburn Dar es Salaam International School, In the secondary section we prioritise STEAM activities as a way to boost students’ engagement and enjoyment in science lessons. Our students from years 7 to 11 have had the opportunity to engage in hand-on activities, such as making candle wax, liquid soap. DNA strands, bridges, and creating a model of the respiratory system.
Through these activities, students have not only learned about scientific concepts but also gained practical skills. Making candle wax and liquid soap, for example, involved understanding chemical reactions and experimenting with different ingredients. Creating a model of the respiratory system required knowledge of human anatomy and collaboration skills to work in groups.
Overall, these STEAM activities have shown positive contributions to learning and provide opportunities for students to apply what they learn in the classroom to real-world situations, boosting their confidence, understanding and engagement with science.
