Secondary Mathematics

It has been a busy few weeks in the maths department.

Year 7 have started their key stage 3 studies and have been very busy with numeracy ninjas and the myimaths website.

Year 9 have started solving some IGCSE questions already.

Year 11 have already had two assessments and year 12 have begun studying mechanics and pure maths at A level.

There have been some big changes to IGCSE mathematics this year and year 11 will be the first students to sit the new exams. As well as some changes to the topics which are covered in the course the main change is that one of the two examinations that they will take in May will be a non-calculator paper.

In a world which is getting more and more reliant on technology to solve problems Cambridge has decided that it is essential that the mental maths skills the parents were taught when they were at school are not lost on this generation of students.

It is now very important that students of all ages practice their mental maths skills, it is particularly important that students learn their times-tables by heart because if they know these well it will help them with many topics in maths, such as fractions, percentages and algebra.
