Roots & shoots

20th January 2024

The Roots'n'Shoots club was busy during term one exploring Jane Goodall’s website for inspiration and discovering efficient examples of good practice to encourage environmental awareness and care for our planet. Many discussions took place on where to start, and it was decided that the recycling established in the past would be encouraged this year too, but also how to do more at-home recycling to reduce recycling costs and carbon footprint. It was agreed that the next most logical and practical step would be to recycle the paper that gets thrown away during class. The club provided every Form classroom with a box in which teachers and pupils can dispose of their unwanted or used sheets of paper. Mr Oketch, our art teacher, agreed to help us. Those boxes get collected and brought to the Art department where the paper will be used in June during Activity week to be turned into papier-mâché both for use and to teach pupils how to make it.

The club has started the new year with a different aim: the beautification of the school ground by having flowers not only in the public area of the school but also on all the school grounds for everybody to enjoy. Everybody is working hard at putting a plan into action to address the practicalities to bring this wonderful idea to fruition. The club decided to have a non-uniform day on 7th March, whereby each student will be asked to bring at least 3000 Tshs or bring a flower in a pot (non-pollen). The money raised will be used to buy flowers for our secondary campus.
