Our Roots & Shoots secondary students have hit the ground running this year with a series of exciting new student-led projects! To make recycling part of everyday school life, they have begun upcycling buckets into recycling bins for classrooms, complete with their own sticker designs to encourage everyday use. Each class will also have student recycling monitors to keep the system running smoothly and to encourage their peers to take part.
The group is preparing a student-led assembly and PSHCE lesson to explain why reducing what we consume and recycling what we can is so important for both our school community and the wider world. They have also been thinking carefully about the impact of waste on our immediate environment, and are drawing up a proposal for a fundraising activity to support a local conservation charity of their choice. In addition, they are planning a beach clean-up, recognizing how waste from our school and neighbourhood can have a direct impact on coastal environments.
What makes this work special is that it is led by the students themselves. They are working closely with our primary pupils so that sustainability becomes a whole-school effort. Building on the successes of Roots & Shoots projects in previous years, our students are showing real leadership and agency, showing that young people can drive meaningful change.
