As we step into Term 3, the Roots & Shoots Club is buzzing with excitement and fresh ideas to make our impact bigger and better!
Before the holidays, we were incredibly fortunate to have a live Skype session with a remarkable Tanzanian charity based in the north of the country. This organisation is using cutting-edge drone technology to help protect both elephants and local communities. The drones are flown at night to track elephant paths and help rangers safely guide the animals away from villages—avoiding dangerous clashes. One of the most fascinating things we learned is that the buzzing sound of the drones mimics bees, which elephants naturally fear, making them an effective and humane tool to guide the herds.
According to the rangers, the introduction of drones has been truly life-changing. Not only has it increased the safety of the elephants, but it’s also dramatically improved the working conditions of rangers who patrol the bush, often for weeks at a time. Inspired by their story, our club raised funds by selling ice cream, and we’re proud to share that the money was used to buy gum boots for the rangers—an essential item for their long treks in challenging conditions.
The charity team was incredibly generous with their time, answering all our questions and even giving us a live demonstration of how the drones operate. It was an inspiring session that left us more motivated than ever to continue supporting global and local conservation efforts.
Looking ahead to this term, the Roots & Shoots Club will be focusing on creative ways to improve our school environment. One key initiative is repurposing plastic bottles to beautify and revitalise the school's recycling area. We believe that even small actions, when done together, can make a big difference.
We’ll also be holding brainstorming sessions to plan our next major projects and decide on a clear course of action. New ideas and new members are always welcome—so if you’re passionate about making a positive impact on the environment, come join us!
Let’s make Term 3 a term of action, creativity, and change.
