Our Pre Creche and Creche children have been looking at the storybook, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury. During the latter part of term 3, they have engaged in art and sensory activities which have enabled their language skills as they learnt about the family’s exciting quest to find bears. As explained in the book, the main characters went to great lengths to find these furry animals passing through sticky mud, a deep river, a snow storm and long wavy grass. The children created sensory bottles to symbolise each of these events as the story was read out to them. Painting with mud and sticking grass onto paper gave them a sense of the natural outdoor environment that the main characters experienced during their bear hunt. The sensory table had manipulatives from the story for the children to investigate and retell the story to each other. The children enjoyed counting and sorting coloured teddy bears as they used tongs to transport them into bowls. To finish the term, the children went on a bear hunt where they found many bears of different sizes hidden around the classroom.
