MUN

What is the UN?

The UN was established in 1945 after the tragic events of World War 2. It is an international organisation that aims to promote peace, security, and cooperation among its193 member countries. The UN works on various global issues, such as human rights, climate change, and poverty.

What is MUN?

MUN stands for Model United Nations. It is an educational simulation in which students role-play as delegates in committees focused on topics such as human rights, ecology, and technology. During these simulations, global issues are debated and discussed. Participation in MUN helps us develop our diplomacy and negotiation skills.

What have we been doing in MUN?

In MUN, we began by discussing what the UN is, why it was founded, and what its goals are. We explored the 17 Sustainable Development Goals that the UN promotes and strives to achieve. These goals include eradicating poverty, achieving gender equality, and preserving life on land and under the sea. This in-depth focus on individual goals enhanced our understanding of them.

Additionally, we worked in groups to examine the UN's initiatives in Tanzania, particularly in the areas of peace, prosperity, planet, and partnership. We learned that the UN has funded the installation of 12 boxes that convert solar energy into renewable energy, while also capturing and purifying rainwater to provide safe drinking water. Each box produces 1,000 litres of clean drinking water daily, alleviating the need for people to walk 5 km a day to fetch water. These 12 boxes now provide 24,000 people with clean energy for both commercial and local needs, thus aiding local businesses and families in prospering.

Through our exploration of these real-world solutions to global issues, we have gained valuable insights into how we can formulate our own resolutions to present at the MUN Conference in Nairobi once we are assigned our respective countries.
