Model United Nations (MUN)

5th October 2024

This week on Monday our MUN club held a debate to discuss the pressing matter of changes occurring in Afghanistan society related to the freedom and rights of women.

Our delegates crafted resolutions attempting to resolve serious issues that arising for women in Afghanistan as a result of the societal changes,

for example lack of access to employment, education, healthcare and a removal from public life. Delegates addressed the topic  from their designated country’s viewpoint.

One resolution, submitted by Asha and her team Liese, Hayaam, and Sabrina was chosen and debated on, whereby delegates were able to practice their use of formalised United Nations language and got to experience how an MUN debate worked, for many it was their first time ever participating in a debate and we were especially proud of how our new members got involved, specifically Asha, Ethan, Lisa, Mayati and Katalina who all spoke.

It was an amazing debate with delegates expressing their viewpoints, expiating their votes and debating amendments. All whilst wearing our pyjamas to raise money for Spirit Week.

Thank you to our chairs, Eda, Andrela and Naveen who kindly offered to run the debate and ensured it went smoothly and also Ms Patterson and Mrs Powell for organising the space and all the materials for the event.

Both Highness and I encourage newer delegates to continue to speak up and practice their debating schools and we are excited to see in which direction this club will go in the future given the positive start we have had this year already.

Kind regards - Iris Hering - Student Deputy Director
