Mathematics

4th May 2024

Our mathematics students are back to the basics of number work at the beginning of a new term. For the younger students, this often involves calculations where they cannot access a calculator, and for our older students, the calculators are a vital tool in working out real world calculations.

Currently, Year 8 students are involved in work on fractions. This involves all the mathematical operations of adding, subtracting, multiplication and division. The ‘catch’, is that not all fractions look alike and quite often are associated with whole numbers. Students have a variety of options to manipulate these numbers to make their calculations as easy as possible, leaving the answer in the most appropriate format.

Year 10 have been working with percentages. We have now turned our attention to how the finance world calculates what they pay or charge for the use of money. Interest rates vary from year to year and investments can run for long periods of time. Students are learning how to calculate the yields from long term investments and, to also calculate the depreciation of goods as they get older.

In this edition, we delve into the captivating journey of Year 8 students as they embark on a quest to unravel the mysteries of circles, discovering the enchanting relationship between diameter and circumference that leads to the awe-inspiring revelation of pi.

At Braeburn, mathematics isn't just numbers on a page; it's a thrilling adventure where students make extraordinary connections between theory and the real world. In Year 8, the spotlight is on circles – those perfectly round wonders that abound in nature and man-made marvels alike. But what makes circles so fascinating? Hold tight, because you're about to find out!

As our young mathematicians dive into the heart of circles, they're not just memorising formulas; they're exploring the very essence of these geometric gems. From understanding the parts of a circle to unravelling the intricate dance between diameter and circumference, every lesson is a voyage of discovery.

But wait, there's more! What sets Braeburn students apart is their insatiable curiosity. Armed with knowledge and fuelled by imagination, they don their detective hats to uncover the hidden gem of mathematics – pi. Yes, that's right, the magical number that unlocks the secrets of circles.

Picture this: students huddled in groups, eyes sparkling with excitement as they measure, calculate, and experiment. Through hands-on activities and real-world examples, they see the relevance of pi in everything from architecture to technology, from nature to space exploration. Suddenly, math isn't just a subject; it's a gateway to understanding the universe.

And the best part? The joy of discovery is contagious. In the hallways and classrooms of Braeburn, you'll find a buzz of excitement as students eagerly share their findings, debate theories, and even embark on their own mathematical quests.

So, what's the secret behind Braeburn's math magic? It's simple – a blend of passionate teachers, engaged learners, and a curriculum that sparks imagination. Here, mathematics isn't a chore; it's a thrilling adventure waiting to be explored.

As we wrap up this edition, we invite you to join us on our mathematical journey. Whether you're a student, a parent, or simply a lover of numbers, there's always room for one more adventurer in our quest to unlock the mysteries of mathematics.
