History Department Update

Exploring the Past, Preparing for the Future

As this term draws to a close, we would like to wish our Year 11 students the very best as they complete their final revision ahead of their exams in May. Easter revision sessions will be available, and we strongly encourage students to attend. A special well done to those who have already shown commitment by attending the Saturday sessions.

In Years 10 and 12, students continue to demonstrate excellent dedication and a positive attitude towards their studies. As pre-mock examinations approach, we encourage students to balance rest with effective revision over the Easter break. The effort invested now will not only support upcoming assessments but also strengthen long-term retention of key historical knowledge.

Across Key Stage 3, students have explored a broad and engaging range of topics. As highlighted in our previous newsletter, the History curriculum is designed to act as both a mirror and a window—allowing students to see their own identities reflected while also expanding their understanding beyond their everyday experiences. This term’s topics have included the Medieval World, Medieval Mali, the Kingdom of Benin, the Second World War, the Holocaust, and the development of sugar. The study of sugar, in particular, has provided a valuable breadth unit, enabling students to explore change and impact over time, including both its positive uses and more complex historical consequences.

Students also had the opportunity to reflect on the role of women in history as part of International Women’s Day. Key Stage 3 students researched inspirational women from around the world and produced some outstanding pieces of work, demonstrating both creativity and thoughtful engagement.

Looking ahead, we are excited about our upcoming international trip to Rome next term. Known as the “Eternal City,” Rome offers a unique opportunity for students to experience history firsthand. From exploring ancient landmarks such as the Colosseum and the Roman Forum to walking in the footsteps of gladiators and emperors, this promises to be an unforgettable and enriching experience.
