‘Butterfly, butterfly, fly, fly away’ was a song learnt by the Creche children during the latter part of term 2. Watching butterflies in the garden sparked a curiosity into these beautiful insects which led onto small conversations about them. The class was mainly interested in their colours and shapes which inspired their artwork. The storybook, ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle exposed them to the life cycle of butterflies and helped them build vocabulary as they learnt about the food items the caterpillar ate. The song ‘There’s a Tiny Caterpillar on a Leaf’ also reinforced the concept of a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly. During their free time, the class made tasty treats to feed their caterpillars and also spoke about what food they liked to eat. Their conversations and artwork have been as colourful as the beautiful butterflies they enjoyed chasing in the garden area!
