Physics

9th September 2023

Students at Braeburn study physics as a standalone subject in Years 10 and 11, taking the IGCSE at the end of Year 11.

Our Year 10 students are approaching the conclusion of the first unit of work on Forces and Motion. We have been exploring momentum and impulse, as well as how momentum is conserved in collisions. They have also learned how to determine the centre of gravity of a two-dimensional shape. This week, they began acquiring the skills necessary for the practical paper, including accuracy, precision, and experiment planning.

In Year 11, we have commenced the Electricity and Magnetism unit. We have delved into topics such as magnetism and static electricity. We had a great deal of enjoyment experimenting with the Van der Graaf generator; the students administered small electric shocks to each other and witnessed their hair stand on end. Additionally, we will commence practising the electricity-related questions on the practical paper as we prepare for the mock exams.
